Dr. Rahul Kumar
Associate Professor
Dr. Rahul Kumar is an academician and researcher currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering at Dayananda Sagar University, Bengaluru. He has expertise in advanced materials, sustainable composites, additive manufacturing, and AI/ML-enabled materials research. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) in the area of biofiller-reinforced polymer composites, with a focus on waste-to-wealth approaches for sustainable engineering materials, and holds an M.Tech. in Design and Manufacturing Engineering from NIT Silchar. He was a recipient of the GATE Scholarship during his postgraduate studies and the MHRD Fellowship, Government of India, during his doctoral programme.
With over eight years of teaching experience, Dr. Kumar has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, curriculum development, laboratory development, student mentoring, and academic administration. He has contributed to the integration of emerging technologies into engineering education, including AI/ML and NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute (DLI)-based learning components in the B.Tech. curriculum, enabling students to develop skills in contemporary AI and data-driven engineering applications. He has also completed several NPTEL-certified courses in engineering and emerging technology domains as part of his commitment to continuous professional development.
His research interests encompass biofibre/biofiller-reinforced polymer composites, natural fibre composites, CFRP/GFRP, functionally graded materials, additive manufacturing, materials informatics, and AI/ML-based materials modelling. Dr. Kumar has published 12+ SCI-indexed research articles, 10+ international conference papers, and five book chapters with reputed publishers including Springer, Elsevier, CRC Press, and De Gruyter. He has also filed/published three Indian patents and serves as a reviewer for several Web of Science and Scopus-indexed journals, including Scientific Reports. His research has received 500+ citations, with an h-index of 11.
He is an active professional member of the Institution of Engineers (India) and contributes to academic, research, accreditation, curriculum development, and departmental activities. His academic and research vision focuses on integrating sustainable materials, advanced manufacturing, AI/ML, and digital technologies to develop intelligent, sustainable, and high-performance engineering solutions.
