Professor and Chairperson
Dr. Venkataramanan N.S. obtained his M.Sc. (1999) and Ph.D. (2004) in Chemistry from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. He is presently Professor and Chairperson, Department of Chemistry, School of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar University (DSU), Bengaluru, where he leads the Electronic Structure Theory Lab. Prior to this, he served as Associate Professor at DSU, Professor at K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering, Trichy, and Assistant Professor (Research) at SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur. He is the "founder faculty" of Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam.
He carried out postdoctoral research at the Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica, Taiwan; the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Sendai, Japan; the Institute of Materials Research (IMR), Tohoku University, Japan; and California State University, East Bay, USA. He has visited the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan thrice as a visiting researcher (2018, 2022 and 2025).
With over 15 years of experience in computational/theoretical and experimental chemistry, he has 89 publications (5,350+ citations, h-index 30) in reputed SCI/Scopus/Web of Science–indexed journals, along with 3 book chapters. He was recognized among the Top 2% Scientists worldwide (Stanford/Elsevier) for 2024 and 2025 in the Chemical Physics category. His paper in Advanced Functional Materials (2013) has been cited over 2,000 times. He is a recipient of the CSIR Senior Research Fellowship (2003) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (Deccan Section) Teacher's Summer Research Fellowship (2016), and serves as a reviewer for journals published by Elsevier, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society, and Wiley.
Research Interests
Dr. Venkataramanan's research interests span the design of metal and metal-oxide clusters for catalysis and electronic applications; 2D materials for electronic and energy-storage applications; materials for gas storage and gas separation; supramolecular chemistry for drug-delivery applications; bimetallic, bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER); green chemical methods for the synthesis of organic intermediates and metallic catalysts; and noncovalent interactions in materials, probed through DFT, AIM, NCI-RDG, NBO, MESP and related electronic-structure analyses.
