Mr. Mrunal Kumbhare

Assistant Professor

Mrunal Kumbhare is an academic and researcher specializing in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Large Language Models. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, School of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar University, Bengaluru.

He has completed his Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Computer Science and Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur. His research focuses on parameter-efficient adaptation of large multilingual language models for low-resource and idiomatic neural machine translation, with an emphasis on developing efficient and scalable AI solutions for multilingual communication.

His M.Tech. thesis, titled Hybrid Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning Framework for Idiomatic Neural Machine Translation, investigates efficient fine-tuning techniques for multilingual transformer models using Hybrid Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT). As part of this work, he developed a multilingual neural machine translation framework based on mBART-50, Houlsby adapters, and selective Transformer layer adaptation. He also curated large-scale English–Hindi and English–Marathi idiomatic parallel datasets, contributing to research in low-resource language translation and multilingual AI.

His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models, Neural Machine Translation, Multilingual AI, Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning, and Generative AI. He is particularly interested in building intelligent systems that improve multilingual communication and enable practical AI applications for linguistically diverse communities.

Alongside his research, Mrunal possesses strong software development expertise with experience in full-stack web development using React.js, Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, JavaScript, Python, and modern software engineering practices. His project work includes developing scalable web applications and RESTful services, enabling him to bridge theoretical AI concepts with practical software development and deployment.

His teaching philosophy emphasizes building strong conceptual foundations while encouraging students to develop practical problem-solving skills through project-based learning, research-oriented thinking, and industry-relevant technologies. He is committed to creating an engaging learning environment that nurtures innovation, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.

Mrunal has qualified the UGC-NET in Computer Science for Assistant Professor and Ph.D. eligibility and has also qualified the GATE examination in Computer Science in both 2023 and 2024, reflecting his strong academic foundation.

At Dayananda Sagar University, he aims to contribute to high-quality teaching, impactful research, and collaborative innovation in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. His long-term vision is to advance research in multilingual AI, intelligent language technologies, and efficient large language models while mentoring students to become globally competent engineers and researchers capable of addressing real-world technological challenges.
