Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science)

Department

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering (Data Science) at Dayananda Sagar University (DSU), Bengaluru, is a dynamic, research-driven academic unit committed to producing the next generation of data scientists, AI practitioners, and analytics professionals. Operating within the School of Engineering and aligned with DSU’s "AI First" institutional vision, the department offers a 4-year B.Tech programme in CSE (Data Science) designed to equip students with the ability to combine machine learning techniques, algorithms, statistical tools, business acumen, and mathematics to extract actionable insights from raw data.

Students are trained across the full data value chain - from collection, storage, and processing to modelling, visualization, and deployment at scale - with a strong emphasis on hands-on, project-based learning.

Recent Infrastructure Upgrades

  • DGX GPU Cluster - high-performance NVIDIA DGX computing infrastructure for research and deep learning workloads.
  • Five Departmental Centres of Excellence (CoEs) - covering Data Engineering, Vision Analytics, and applied AI.
  • IBM Software Lab for Emerging Technologies - access to IBM tools and platforms for software development and analytics.
  • Dedicated Data Science & Computing Laboratories - purpose-built for data preprocessing, model training, and deployment.
  • DSU AI First Initiative - the department is central to the university’s AI-First strategy across research, curriculum, and pedagogy.

Curriculum Growth - Courses Offered by Year

Academic Year Total Courses Offered New / Revised Courses % Revised
2023-24 54 10 18.5%
2024-25 58 9 15.5%
2025-26 52 10 19.2%

The department maintains a rolling curriculum-revision cycle, with roughly one in five courses updated each year - reflecting the introduction of new-age topics such as DevOps & MLOps, Cloud Data Engineering, Deep Learning Essentials, Data Privacy & Ethics, and Data Science for AI.

Curriculum Focus Areas (2025-26 Onwards)

  • Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • MLOps and DevSecOps for AI pipelines
  • Federated Learning and Privacy-Preserving AI
  • Explainable AI (XAI) and Responsible AI
  • Cloud Application Development and Distributed Computing
  • Agentic AI Systems

Industry Certification Track Record

The department has institutionalised certification-based alternate assessment by embedding globally recognised industry certifications directly into core courses. In Cloud Data Engineering, all 135 fifth-semester students of the previous cohort completed two industry certifications in a single semester at a 100% pass rate - recorded student-by-student and independently verifiable. The model has been retained and expanded, with the current 5th-semester cohort of 203 students pursuing the AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate certification.

1.3 NVIDIA Partnership - Powering AI Education

The Department of CSE (Data Science) has an active partnership with NVIDIA through its Deep Learning Institute (DLI), embedding industry-grade AI training directly into the curriculum. This collaboration gives students hands-on, certified exposure to GPU-accelerated computing, deep learning, and AI infrastructure - the same tools used across industry and research.

What the Partnership Delivers

  • 15 NVIDIA DLI-certified courses mapped across all 8 semesters, contributing 52 credits (32.5% of the 160-credit programme) - one of the most DLI-integrated curricula in the region
  • DGX GPU Cluster access - students and faculty run large-scale deep learning and data science workloads on NVIDIA DGX infrastructure
  • Certification pathways - DLI Associate and Professional tracks in Generative AI & LLMs and Accelerated Data Science
  • Faculty enablement - faculty trained as DLI-certified instructors to deliver the mapped courses in-house

University-wide NVIDIA Ecosystem

As part of DSU's broader "AI First" and NVIDIA AI Factory initiatives, students also benefit from institution-level facilities including the NVIDIA-Boston Innovation Lab, reinforcing a campus-wide commitment to advanced AI infrastructure.
